The Challenge
In a recent project, Norpoint was tasked with the external abrasive blasting and coating of 17 High Pressure MLBV (Main Line Block Valve) assemblies for a gas transmission line. The scope of work required the valves, sized at NPS 36" and 48", to be processed during the winter months. A significant challenge of this project was the sheer size and weight of the assemblies, with some exceeding 70,000 lbs.
The Challenge
Winter conditions and size of the assemblies presented a major hurdle. The extreme cold temperatures would have necessitated costly heat and hoarding and a significant amount of time to warm the heavy wall thickness of each assembly to the required temperature for proper blasting and coating parameters. This would have led to project delays and potential quality issues. Additionally, the massive size and weight of the assemblies presented logistical difficulties for offloading and moving.
Norpoint's Solution
Norpoint’s advanced facility in Calmar, Alberta, provided the ideal solution to overcome these challenges. The shop's unique capabilities were a perfect fit for the oversized components.
- Temperature-Controlled Environment: The indoor, heated shop eliminated the temperature-related delays. The valves were brought inside, allowing the metal to be warmed, ensuring the abrasive blasting and coating processes were completed according to specification.
- Superior Accessibility: With a massive 33' x 30' door opening, the shop provided easy and efficient access for the oversized valves. This was critical for a smooth workflow and on-time delivery.
- Heavy-Lift Capacity: Recognizing that the assemblies' weight exceeded the capacity of their internal overhead cranes, Norpoint seamlessly coordinated with a third-party crane service. This collaboration allowed for the safe and efficient offloading and maneuvering of the heavy valves inside the shop.
Results
Despite the initial logistical and environmental challenges, Norpoint's expert team and state-ofthe-art facility ensured a successful project completion. The 17 High Pressure MLBV assemblies were processed on schedule and met all quality and specification requirements, demonstrating Norpoint’s capability to handle complex, large-scale industrial projects in challenging conditions.
