Maybe several trades need to keep working in the same area. Maybe extensive containment would add time, cost or another layer of complexity to an already tight turnaround.
Those aren't coating problems.

What Is Sponge Blasting?
Sponge blasting is a low-dust surface preparation method that uses abrasive media contained within a resilient sponge material.
When the sponge media hits the surface, it flattens and exposes the abrasive, which removes the coating and creates the required surface profile. As the sponge rebounds, it helps capture dust and coating debris that would otherwise become airborne.
That difference matters.
Reducing airborne dust and rebound can make sponge blasting useful in areas where conventional abrasive blasting creates additional challenges around operating equipment, instrumentation, other trades or containment.
And while dust control is one of the technology's biggest advantages, it still has to do the actual surface preparation work.
Sponge blasting can be used to achieve recognized SSPC/NACE surface preparation standards and create the anchor profile required for coating adhesion, depending on the media selected and project requirements.
That's an important distinction.
This isn't simply a cleaner way to remove a coating. It's another surface preparation option for projects where what's happening around the work matters just as much as the surface itself.
Where Sponge Blasting Can Influence the Project
Consider a turnaround where the work is happening beside equipment that needs to remain online.
With conventional abrasive blasting, dust, rebound and containment requirements can affect much more than the immediate work area. Sensitive equipment may need additional protection. Other trades may have to be moved or sequenced differently. Containment itself can become another piece of the schedule.
Sponge blasting influences some of those variables.
Because the media helps capture dust and debris at the point of impact, there may be opportunities to reduce containment requirements, protect nearby equipment more effectively or allow adjacent work to continue, depending on the project.
Lead-containing coatings are another example.
Removing the coating is only part of the job. Controlling where contaminated material goes matters too.
